Some real estate agents have been looking for the genie in the lamp. The change in market is making an impact on these profiteers. During the seven fat years when there was easy money to be made, people flocked to real estate in droves. Now the seven lean years have arrived and they're beginning to drop out almost as quickly. The money in real estate is not so easy anymore. The stress is high and the sales are few. Getting a listing no longer means a guaranteed commission. Those who didn't plan ahead for when the market would right itself are now suffering and turning to other fields with easier and steadier income. Those that are leaving did not find the genie in the lamp while they were in the profession. What they found instead was hard work, long hours, financial outlay, stress, and inconsistent income . . . not as profitable as a genie!

Funny you should mention Shirky. We came across an interesting article of his which just happened to influence Chris Anderson & his Long Tail.
