It's Friday! The most anticipated week day because TONIGHT is when the weekend begins. The weekend when we can do what WE choose to do and not have to punch a clock or be accountable to someone else for our activities.
For St. Paul real estate agents weekends and evenings are OUR work hours. Carving out a weekend to go "up north" is a daunting task. It seems one works twice as hard before going and twice as hard when returning. The weekend and evenings are normally when showings are scheduled (most people work and don't take vacation time to tour houses), open houses are conducted (no one comes on a weekday!), and client conferences are held to do paperwork. Monday through Friday become "prep" days for the weekend.
Personal time for people in real estate has to be scheduled. Today a baby announcement came from a loan officer. How does birth get scheduled into his self employment? The baby pictures were wondrous. The hospital picture of an unshaven loan officer in casual clothes made me smile. He was doing what he should be doing, fully engaged and fully present for his family. In the back of his mind, however, files may have been flying about and lost income a concern. He'll answer e-mails and process files while his wife and child sleep.
The tyranny of self-employment is learning to say no, learning to schedule in rest, learning how to operate a schedule opposite of the others in your life. The boon of self employment is being able to say no, being in charge of my own schedule, and being able to attend day time performances without taking time off. Real estate is not a job for slackards! A colleague dubbed Friday as frantic. I knew instantly what she meant. Friday preparations for the busy weekend can be a frenzy. Frenzy is good! Frenzy means we're working! Frenzy is energizing. On Tuesday, we'll rest!
