Did your neighborhood have a National Night Out gathering? We did. It was great fun. It was going to be in the park, but that was booked. Then it was going to be in the town home commons but that didn't work out. Eventually we ended up where it's been many years before . . . in a driveway shared by two adjoining neighbors.
Our block club decided on a pot-luck barbecue. Everyone brought their own meat and a dish to share. Talk about a spread! Some years everyone brings potato salad. This year there wasn't a duplicated food item. Yum!
The police came, our city councilwoman Debbie Montgomery and her husband attended, and the person who hopes to win Debbie's seat on the council showed up as well.
There's something about eating and hanging out together that strengthens a neighborhood. If you haven't attended one of your neighborhood's National Night Out celebrations, check it out next year. If your neighborhood doesn't have one, why not be the instigator and organize one of your own? Strong neighbor relations deter crime and that's a goal we can all support!
